Glossary of Terms

Advocacy:
Supporting a cause or proposal on behalf of another

Burial/Buried:
To place (a deceased) in a grave, a tomb, or the sea; inter
To dispose of (a deceased) ritualistically by means other than cremation

Casket:
A casket is rectangular in shape and is the same width & height at the head as at the foot. It is usually made of solid wood or metal. The lid is hinged on one side to assist in viewing purposes. They are traditionally larger than coffins and come in a variety of designs

Celebrant:
A person who officiates at a religious or civil ceremony or rite, especially a wedding or funeral.

Chapel:
Is typically a private Church or area of worship

Clergy:
A man or woman who is authorised to perform religious functions such as weddings, funerals and baptisms, in a church

Coffin:
A coffin is more traditional with tapering at the head and feet. It is usually made of wood, particleboard, custom wood or solid timber. The lid of a coffin is separate and is secured in place with plastic or metal screws

Cremation:
The combustion of a deceased body

Crematorium:
An establishment for the disposal of deceased peoples remains via combustion

Deceased:
To die; The act of dying; Death

D.I.Y:
Do it yourself

Eulogy:
A laudatory speech or written tribute, especially one praising someone who has died. High praise or commendation

Funeral:
A ceremony or group of ceremonies held in connection with the burial or cremation of a deceased person
The burial procession accompanying a body to the grave

Inter:
To place in a grave or tomb; to bury

Mementoes:
A reminder of the past; a keepsake

Memorial:
Serving as a remembrance of a person or an event

Mourning Coach:
A vehicle used to transport the family to a funeral Service - often provided by the Funeral Director

Refreshments:
A snack or light meal and drinks

Rental Coffin:
A simple particleboard coffin placed under a traditional coffin/casket shell. This shell is removed prior to cremation. The shell is re-used by the funeral Director and is considered on loan to the family

Rite:
The prescribed or customary form for conducting a religious or other solemn ceremony: the rite of baptism

Ritual:
The prescribed order of a religious ceremony
